Well its been a while - 2022 Sewing Plans

January 2, 2022

Three years actually, safe to say a lot has happened in those three years.  The last time I posted I'd just moved to Brisbane, since then I've lived at the Sunshine Coast and am now back home. Theres been a few job changes along the way too, including a redundancy, but its all been worth it as I'm finally in my dream job and have just finished my degree.

Since I finished my degree at the end of November I've been struggling to feel like I'm not wasting my time, however I finally accepted that I needed to rest and recalibrate. 4.5 years of study and work really took its toll.

Thankfully the past few weeks has given me a fair bit of time to focus on some goals for 2022. As someone who works better with goals I tend to go a bit overboard so I've been trying to have lots of little super achievable goals and then a few bigger overarching ones.

My main sewing related goals for 2022 are:

Buy no patterns - use only what I have, hack patterns, use free options or draft from my block.

In the interests of full disclosure I may have purchased a pattern yesterday (but it was $3 and I only needed to purchase it as McCalls split their size range and the one I had access to wasn't my size 🙄, so I'm pretending it doesn't count).

I'm not sure this is totally achieveable but I'm hoping to really limit it and focus on my drafting skills this year.  Hopefully I'll be able to take a few more classes at Sewing Adventures to really hone these skills

Purchase no new fabric - shopping destashes and second hand where possible

I did a fair bit of shopping during the boxing day sales and have a very extensive stash so this shouldn't be too bad, however there are a couple of exceptions for specific projects I have in mind, or where I need something specific to finish a project and nothing suitable is available in my stash. The other exception is if I end up taking a trip to Roma for work, there is no way I'm going to Roma and not doing some fabric shopping at the legendary Ace Drapers.

Sew my Make Nine

Line Drawings from pattern designers - specified below

Ogden Cami - True Bias - This is a TNT pattern for me now, I've made plenty of versions over the years. This one will be made using a Silk Satin from my stash (orignally from The Fabric Store). In fact its already cut out and ready to sew at my sewing retreat coming up this weekend.

Boylton Bra - Orange Lingerie - This one is another TNT, its pretty much the only bra I wear these. I'd love to make a few more so I have a sets for the week. I've actually got a few already made but I ran out of underwires, thankfully these are on the way so I'm part way there already.

Ginger Jeans - Colset Core - Again, another TNT, my Ginger Jeans obsession should be well known at this point. Working in construction jeans are pretty much part of my work uniform. Considering how much I wear them these need to be replaced in my wardrobe on a semi regular basis and that time has come already.

Heather Blazer - Friday Pattern Company - My friends tease me about having a blazer obsession, I've made plenty of Morris and Bellatrix Blazers, but one of the girls I work with came into work wearing a blazer of a similar style to the Heather in a Blue and White stripe and I needed to have one in my wardrobe. I found this blue and white stripe linen from Darn Cheap Fabrics and it was just what I'd been hunting for. I can't wait to see this one come together, I'm sure it will become a firm favourite.

V1714 - Vogue Patterns - This is my biggest goal project for the year, I've been inspired by Birdy and Julia Bobbin, to make my own leather jacket.  I've toiled this one and it needs a few more tweaks but I need to find some leather and take the plunge. I'm still trying to decide on a colour but I need to shop for this one in person and Packer is only open weekdays which makes it harder to get there.

Kelly Anorak - Closet Core Patterns - This one has been on my to make list for years and I'm determined 2022 will be the year.

Fiona Sundress - Closet Core Patterns - I'm planning to make this one using some mustard cone mills denim, I've toiled this one and it needs some serious help, but I think I'll be able to get it there in time for sewing retreat.

Mile End Sweatshirt - Closet Core Patterns - I'm making view B with the tie through the front, i'm using a mint striped French Terry from my stash. This one is already cut out and ready for sewing retreat.

Sandeep Dress - By Hand London - My uni graduation is coming up in April (pending border restrictions) and when I saw this patten release I knew that this was my graduation dress.  I purchased some stunning Lady McElroy Viscose from Seamstress Fabrics and I can't wait to make this one.

I'm trying to commit to sharing my makes and pushing myself out of my comfort zone a bit more, so I'm hoping it won't be 3 years between posts again.
