Some of my Quilts #14 - Ombre quilt

I bought a Simply Color Ombre Junior Jelly Roll by V and Co because I fell in love with it.  Of course I couldn't bring myself to open it until I found the prefect pattern.  Thankfully that happened rather quickly when I stumbled upon this Ombre Rainbow Quilt by The Girl Who Quilts.  

I quilted over the ombre sections in figure of eights using threads I pulled from my thread stash.  Thankfully due to the ombre effect of the fabrics it was easy to find a thread that blended at some point.

I used a purple chevron poplin from Spotlight for the backing and a Michael Miller fabric from East Coast Fabrics for the binding.

The only thing I wish was different about this quilt was the size!  Wouldn't wide back ombre prints be amazing!

Sunday Stash #9 - Cinderberry Stitches

No new fabric this week, instead I'm revisiting a little collection that I have on my shelf waiting for the prefect project.

I have quite a collection of half metre cuts of these amazing fabrics.  Most are from the Woodland Range, some are from Folk Tale, all were purchased from East Coast Fabrics.  

A quick calculation reveals I have 10 metres of this fabric begging to be used.  Better get pattern hunting!

Sunday Stash #2 - Quilting Fabric

I went up to the coast to visit my sister the other week so of course I had to make a pit stop at East Coast Fabrics.  East Coast is my favourite fabric store, mainly due to the crazy prices you can get amazing fabrics!  Most (about 90% or so if not more) of their quilting fabric is under $9.95/m.  Now, that might not seem cheap to people living in the US, but considering the retail of Robert Kaufman fabrics is Australia is about $20/m under $9.95 is nuts!  Sadly East Coast doesn't seem to stock Moda, but that is about the only brand of quilting fabric I have never seen there.

East Coast also have a wonderful range of dress making fabrics but this time I stuck to the quilting fabric section.

The first fabric I got was this Princess and the Pea fabric from the Quiet Time range by Tamara Kate for Michael Miller.  I totally adore it.  I bought enough of it for the backing of a baby quilt because that is where I can see myself using it.

Next I grabbed this Timeless Treasures bias black and white stripe for binding.  I really like the bias stripe for the biding.  Plus you can never go wrong with black and white stripes for binding.  Though this fabric does hurt my eyes if I look at it for too long!  Thankfully that will be solved when it's cut for binding width.

I also grabbed 1/2 a metre each of these two teal dots (The left has no selvedge info, the right is by Jaycyn for Birch Fabrics).  Teal is up there as one of my favourite colours and there was no way I could leave them behind.

Feathers Quit

I promised my friend a quilt for her 21st birthday back in 2013.  Somehow life got in the way like it always seems to.

It took me months to decide on a pattern and pull fabric she liked, especially as her one request was it match a cushion cover I had made about two years before.

Finally we settled on Feathers by Anna Maria Horner using a range of scrappy fabrics from Spotlight and East Coast.  I ordered a set of acrylic templates from the Sunset Seams Etsy Store to make cutting a little easier.   So for her 22nd birthday my friend got some blocks for her quilt.

Fast forward another few months and I had a finished quilt top.  Add another few months onto that and I got around to making the backing fabric.  We narrowed down the selections to this.

 

A strip of feather fabric from Spotlight surrounded on either side by old DS lines, also from Spotlight.

 

Binding was again from Spotlight, a nice navy, white and gold metallic stripe.  I bought a metre of it and cut it all up for binding.  Its already been used on this one and another quilt.

 

 

However it was the basting of this quilt which was a mission.  I took a photo of the process, just because it was much more effort than the normal sized quilt I would make.

 

 

 

 

It took up the entire lounge room!  Even after I moved the couch out of the way.  And yes trashy reality TV makes everything better!

 

 

Thankfully quilting didn't take too long, eight bobbins of quilting.  It should have been nine but there was a tiny patch left when the eighth one emptied.  So there it stayed.  I was well and truly done by that point. 

 

 

I was keeping my friend updated throughout the whole process.  So when I let her know it was finished in the washing machine by sending her this photo she could barely wait for it to dry.  In fact she was so keen to get it she couldn't wait for it to be 100% dry, let alone for me to get a photo! 

 

 

 

Thankfully she did send one through a few days later.  And I'm pretty impressed with how it matched the cushion that started it all!

 

 

I'm very happy with how it turned out, even though I'm not sure I'll ever make one again!

Ice Cream Baby Quilt

When I found out my brother in laws cousins were expecting a baby I was incredibly excited for them!  I may have been slightly more excited when I found out they were expecting a girl.  As I have four nephews I don't get to sew girly things very often.

When planning this quilt I was inspired by this mini quilt by Heather from Quilt Story.  I fell head over heels in love with it when I saw it on Instagram. 

Even though I had never tried paper piecing before following this tutorial from Sew We Quilt I found it rather straight forward.  Even with the mess it left on the floor of my sewing room.

 

I enlarged the blocks to a percentage I can't quite remember.  The quilt ended up quite a nice baby size.  The fabrics are mostly scrappy some Bonnie and Camille, Sweetwater, Michael Miller and Spotlight.  The main fabric is of course Ombre by V and Co for Moda.

 

I purchased the backing from East Coast Fabrics (My favourite fabric store, very thankful I live an hour from the nearest one!).

 



 

All rolled up and ready to gift next week!

 

 

 

The binding fabric was from Spotlight, bought on a whim because it was perfect for binding.

 

Can't wait to see their reaction.
