A Finished Quilt - Northern Lights

I'm pleased to announce I actually finished one of my longest WIPs, I only know how long ago I started it thanks to an old instagram photo!

Boxing Day 2012!  Thats nearly 5 years ago! I actually had this one finished back in about February but you know, life happened and I'm only getting around to blogging about it now.

I actually only have one photo of the finished quilt, but thats for a good reason, I donated it to the Toowoomba Hospice and it was raffled off at a Masquerade Ball that my friend organised.

Anyway, I thought it was worth noting that this quilt actually did get finished, considering I'd talked about finishing it for so long!

Finished Fireman Come What May Quilt

It's finished!  This is the first quilt I've finished in quite a while, in fact the last quilt I finished was in January last year. I'm so glad I finally finished this quilt.  I've had it planned for a number of years after I found the fabric but never actually got around to making it.  Thankfully a birthday is a good reason to knock a quilt off the to do list.

The pattern is Come What May by Jaybird Quilts.  You can read more about my love of this pattern in my last post.  

I quilted it in a swirl pattern using navy thread.  I wasn't sold on it when I started but it did grow on me and now I love it!  Though deciding to free motion quilt after a killer arm session at the gym was not the wisest decision I've ever had.  It did make the whole process take much longer than it should have.

It's bound in a print from the same range, with adorable fire hydrants, I think the red sets off the quilt, it's probably my favourite thing about it.

I pieced the backing, I do this quite often, especially when the quilt is just over 42 inches, it makes backing much for affordable.  The main backing print is from Spotlight, I'm not overly in love with it but it is growing on me, it's always the case when you need to finish something you can never find something suitable.

I also added one of my new Spoonflower labels.  I really like these ones, they're a bit more fun than the ones I've used before.

I'm sure the birthday boy will love it, even though it's nearly a month late now but I do get to give it to him in person this way!  I can't wait to see it on his bed next time I visit.

Fireman Come What May Quilt

Come What May by Jaybird Quilts is one of favourite quilt patterns of all time. I seriously love it.  This one is my third using this pattern and I love it more each and every time.  It comes together so quickly and is great to show off some larger prints you can't bare to cut up, the smallest pieces of this quilt are cut at 4.5" square.

This quilt is for my nephews third birthday, which was actually about two weeks ago but I'm seeing him next weekend so I actually have to get it finished.  Nothing like a deadline to get sew-jo back!

I made this quilt cot sized, which will fit his bed nicely, plus his bed is the shape of a fire engine so it will be prefect.  Cot size isn't actually listed on the pattern but I just cut the layout down to 3x4 blocks.  I actually picked up these fabric a few years ago to make a quit for my other nephew but that never happened.  I'm just glad it got used!  I have plans to make a matching pillowcase for him as well.  It should be adorable.

My Spoonflower order also arrived this week.  Some new labels, a wedding present, a birthday present (to be revealed later) and a Cotton Spandex Jersey FQ for a bra/undies set.  Hopefully if the deadline doesn't work with bringing back the sew jo, this will, it is just lovely!

Some of my Quilts #3 - Come What May

This is the third post in a series showing some of my pre-blog quilts. See the other posts here.

This quilt is one of my all time favourites! (How many favourite quilts can you have?) This one is a baby sized version of the brilliant Come What May pattern by Jaybird Quilts. It was a wonderfully written pattern, like all Jaybird Quilts patterns are! 

The fabric is all from DS quilts lines, all purchased from Spotlight. With all the blues its almost a low volume quilt without using traditionally low volume fabric.  Plus I made it long before I knew low volume was even a thing!

I quilted this quilt on my quilting frame, so the stitches are amazingly even!

One of my favourite things about this quilt is that when I posted a photo of it to Jaybird Quilts facebook page Denyse Schmidt liked the photo! With her personal page! Talk about fan girl moment!

#SewMyStash 2015

I have quite a fabric stash.  I rolled 90% of my fabric before Christmas and calculated that I have over 100m of yardage!  That only includes pieces a 1/2 metre of over.  It doesn't include any of my precuts (eek!)

I figured I might try and chronicle some of the things I want to sew on my quilty  bucket list.  Or at least make myself accountable for sewing things in my stash.  See this post by Leasa for more info.

I am in love with this quilt by Camille! So much so I'm thinking about opening up my prized 'Make Life' Fat Quarter Bundle to make one similar!

I'm collecting charm packs.  With the intention of one day making a bed quilt using all of my favourite fabric collections.  This is my collection so far, it really does include some special collections!

  

 



 

Mixing these two together...  Somehow for something, maybe a baby boy quilt.  If I ever need to make one that is!

 

 

 

Using Cotton and Steel Basics for the Chic Stars quilt using the Quick Curve Ruler.

 

 I'm going to need to make a blue quilt using my blue stash, this is just part of it!

 

 

When I went overseas in 2011 I collected fabrics of places I went that would remind me of my holiday with the intention of making a quilt using them.  They haven't made it that far yet, they just look pretty on my shelf.  Maybe this year will be the year.

 

 

 

 

I have everything set aside for this quilt.  The top is made, the back is pieced, the binding fabric is set aside but it's still not done.  Good thing I have a resolution to #FinishIt2015 too!

 



 

A Cheerio quilt using Bliss and Miss Kate, I think they work well together!

 



 

I've had this fabric (Along with solids) for a Come What May quilt for my nephew for ages! He has a fire engine bed and it would look adorable!

 

 

 

I also have this pile.  It is very precious!  I am a bit of a Sweetwater fan.  I would love a pure Jelly Roll too, maybe one day!
