Spell it with Moda Quilt Top

So it's been more than a little while since I last posted, I meant to post, and then all of a sudden a few weeks had gone by and then it was basically a month.  I've been super busy with work, guides and gym.  It's also gotten bitterly cold here lately, it was still below zero at 8.30 yesterday morning, freezing!

I've been working on Mermaid pose at yoga, I'm pleased with how far I've come with it.



It's such a wonderful stretch and lots of fun to sit in for a while.

I'd been thinking about making a 'Spell it with Moda' quilt ever since the blog hop came out a few years ago however I just never got around to it.  That was until I decided to break into my precious 'Make Life' by Sweetwater Jelly Roll, because it's only fabric right?  I'm so glad I did because I love the results!

I also branched out of my comfort zone and used a charcoal for the background, I normally stick to white or light colours so this pushed my boundaries but I seriously love how it turned out.

I loved making up the filler blocks, it was so much fun and adds that extra personal touch to the quilt.  I also really need to make a dwell quilt, it's moved much higher up on my list lately.

Sunday Stash #11 - Prized Possessions

These two might be the most prized possessions in my stash.  I bought them long after they had been out of print, they've been rerolled, but they're all still there.

They are two of my all time favourite fabric lines (How many lines are allowed to be in that list anyway?).  Make Life and Authentic by Sweetwater.  If only I had a Pure Jelly Roll I would have the prefect stack.  Maybe one day I'll find one for the right price :)

I have no plans for these yet sadly.  That meme that days "Life is about finding the perfect fabric and never cutting it" really applies to these babies!

Some of my Quilts #13 - When Fabric Lines Colide

This is the thirteenth post in a series of posts about my pre blog quilts.  Check out the rest of them here.

I really love this quilt.  Like really, really love it.  I started this quilt back in 2013 but only finished it earlier this year.  In fact it was my first finish of 2015, I'm not sure why I never blogged about it back then.  The block pattern is from this post on the Moda Bake Shop.  As you can see I didn't really follow the pattern except for the blocks.  To give you an idea I used two charm packs plus background fabric to make this quilt.

One of the reasons this quilt is my one of my favourites is because it combines two amazing lines by two of my favourite designers - Wishes by Sweetwater and April Showers by Bonnie and Camille.  As you can see in the block above these two lines were made to go together.

I mean come on, look at how well they work together!

I backed it with Britten Number fabric from Ikea.  It is bound with a navy and gold metallic bias stripe from Spotlight, the same one I used on this quilt.  

I think it is really important as quilters that we try and branch out from simply opening a precut and sew up a quilt.  While I am a huge fan of precuts I think I loose some of the creative process that you get when you sit and pull fabric to make an entire quilt regardless of fabric line or designer.  Or at least combine precuts to end up with some awesome results.

Sunday Stash #6 - Make Life

As I mentioned last week, Sweetwater are up at the top of the list of my favourite fabric designers.  I do think however that I love their order lines more than I have their current ones.  Pure, Authentic and Make Life are my favourite fabric lines of all time.

I managed to find bundle of fat quarters of Make Life on Instagram under The Great Fabric Destash (also be sure the check Great Aussie Destash) hashtag. I was unable to resist and thankfully it showed up on my doorstep the other day.



Yum, yum, yum!  Now just to find the perfect pattern!

Some of my Quilts #8 - Pure Quilt

This is the eighth post in a series of posts about my pre blog quilts.  Check out the rest of them here.

This quilt uses one of my favourite fabric lines ever, Pure by Sweetwater.  I really must love my sister as I made her a quilt out of it and haven't actually finished one for myself yet!

I finished this quilt in 2011 and took it over to London with me and gave it to her at Christmas.  She loved it!

Anyway, it is a simple raggy square quilt, and I'm pleased to report that she still uses it and it takes pride of place on her bed.

And here it is in use.  I even took the photo above the bed.

Sunday Stash #5 - Varsity

I love getting my hands on pre-release fabric!  It's like a little thrill getting something before everyone else has it.

Sweetwater is one of my favourite fabric designers ever but I wasn't sold on their new varsity line.  Until I saw it in person.  Perfect design, perfect boy colours.  SOLD!

I purchased a charm pack from Patchworks Plus on Instagram.  I tend to restrict myself to a charm pack because I'm on a budget and I can't afford to buy a layer cake (or jelly roll, or fat quarter bundle) of every line I like,   Charm packs are cheap and usable and prefect for getting that line without all the commitment money wise :)

I mean look at the detail in that print!

Some of my Quilts #6 - Hometown Lighthouse

This post is the sixth in a series of posts about some of my pre-blog quilts.  See the rest of them here.

This quilt is a staple on the couch.  Not too stiff, not too small.  It's a bit like baby bears bed in quilt form, just right!  The pattern is Lighthouse by Sweetwater, released with their Hometown fabric line.

I managed to score a pre release jelly roll (before I knew what pre release really was).  I ordered a few of the patterns from them around this time and this was one of them.

It was simple to make and really effective, though probably not recommended for large prints.  I bound it in a print from the line as well.

The border and backing came from Spotlight (Surprise, Surprise right?).  I really love the backing fabric its got a tree of life feel about it.

I straight line quilted the main section of the quilt and then did a loopy design on the borders.

I really must make another quilt using this pattern!

#SewMyStash 2015

I have quite a fabric stash.  I rolled 90% of my fabric before Christmas and calculated that I have over 100m of yardage!  That only includes pieces a 1/2 metre of over.  It doesn't include any of my precuts (eek!)

I figured I might try and chronicle some of the things I want to sew on my quilty  bucket list.  Or at least make myself accountable for sewing things in my stash.  See this post by Leasa for more info.

I am in love with this quilt by Camille! So much so I'm thinking about opening up my prized 'Make Life' Fat Quarter Bundle to make one similar!

I'm collecting charm packs.  With the intention of one day making a bed quilt using all of my favourite fabric collections.  This is my collection so far, it really does include some special collections!

  

 



 

Mixing these two together...  Somehow for something, maybe a baby boy quilt.  If I ever need to make one that is!

 

 

 

Using Cotton and Steel Basics for the Chic Stars quilt using the Quick Curve Ruler.

 

 I'm going to need to make a blue quilt using my blue stash, this is just part of it!

 

 

When I went overseas in 2011 I collected fabrics of places I went that would remind me of my holiday with the intention of making a quilt using them.  They haven't made it that far yet, they just look pretty on my shelf.  Maybe this year will be the year.

 

 

 

 

I have everything set aside for this quilt.  The top is made, the back is pieced, the binding fabric is set aside but it's still not done.  Good thing I have a resolution to #FinishIt2015 too!

 



 

A Cheerio quilt using Bliss and Miss Kate, I think they work well together!

 



 

I've had this fabric (Along with solids) for a Come What May quilt for my nephew for ages! He has a fire engine bed and it would look adorable!

 

 

 

I also have this pile.  It is very precious!  I am a bit of a Sweetwater fan.  I would love a pure Jelly Roll too, maybe one day!
